حلوة التمر بالطحين
Halwat Al Tamur Bil Taheen translated is date dessert with flour.
I must admit, It does not look extremely appetizing nor tidy. But i promise you dear reader. It is just A.W.E.S.O.M.E. Its a very traditional dessert here in the UAE. My dear grandmother use to make this and my dear mom makes this now. How can i describe this,
When its delicate body enters your mouth, the rich taste of browned flour simply overtakes you. The immense flavor of the semi-melted dates devour your senses, and one spoon, turns into five.
The combining of dates & cooked flour turns this into a very mushy dessert. It makes me feel warm, and makes me remember the good old Beduin days. When it enters my mouth, i feel like I’m standing in the middle of the desert. Well, anything with dates does this to me for some reason.
YES, I know…Im very dramatic with food.
-1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
- 4 big spoons of ghee
-1 kilo of pitted dates
-1 tbs of Ground fennel
-1 tbs of cardamon
In a hot pan, melt the ghee SLIGHTLY and then add the flour, keep stirring until browned (Dont over brown a lot of it will burn) this might take 5-7 minutes. Then add the pitted dates and remove the pan from the heat and stir well. Add the spices and stir until everything is combined really well. The Dates should blend into the flour mixture well. Pour into a bowl and serve.
This could be kept for a couple of days. Simply heat in the microwave for a while until warm and devour.
Your dessert is now ready. Bil Afyah! (The arabic word for Bon appetite!)
This dessert is pretty awesome with yoghurt as well :)
